George III Longcase clock by Gabriel Holland, Coventry


Finely figured flame mahogany case with moulded skirting to the panelled plinth. The trunk with long arched door with brass escutcheon. The hood with brass capitals, side viewing windows and brass finials.

Brass dial with finely matted centre and silver chapter ring, small calendar aperture and original finely cut steel hands.

Eight day five pillar movement of fine quality striking the hours on a large bell. The clock retains it’s original pendulum and lead weights. c.1740.

Gabriel Holland is listed in J.McKenna’s informative book ‘Clockmakers and Watchmakers of Central England’ as working in Coventry from 1740 to 1750.
A Burr walnut longcase clock, a cartel clock and a bracket clock are known by him. He was the brother of Richard Holland who was also a clockmaker, silversmith and jeweller working in High Street, Coventry from 1749 to 1783.
