The shaped gallery incorporating pierced handles. The sliding retractable cupboard door above square section legs. The pot drawer now converted to a normal drawer.

In the drawings from the period, the furniture designers describe these items, which are now known as ‘Night Commodes’ as ‘Night Tables’ or ‘Pot Commodes’. Elizabeth White comments that: ‘The description ‘commode’ for this piece of furniture was not generally used in the eighteenth century.’ In their ‘The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide’, A. Hepplewhite & Co. comment that the pot commode was: ‘[a]n article of much use in bed-chambers, counting houses, offices, etc.’ (‘Section 13. Night Tables and Pot Cupboards’ in Elizabeth White, ‘Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design: The Printed Sources’ (Antique Collectors’ Club, 1990), pp.259-60).
