A magnificent, George III, Mahogany, Oval Wine Cellaret, by Gillow of Lancaster. The oval hinged lid is exquisitely carved, with radiating flutes, centred by a gadrooned and beaded finial, and opens to reveal its original lead lining. Raised on wonderful reeded baluster supports, ending with the original brass cap castors, the cellaret retains excellent colour and patination to its well-figured veneers. Of museum quality, this most elegant piece is a superb example of Gillow’s work and indeed an important piece of English furniture.

N.B. Gillow’s earliest sketch for an oval lead-lined ‘wine-cistern’ features in their 1787 ‘Estimate Sketch Book’. This item relates to a number of well known examples that were made by Gillows; one from the collection of Mr W Meyer is illustrated in R Edwards & P Macquoid’s ‘The Dictionary of English Furniture’, London; revised edition 1954, vol. 1, page 223
