A mid eighteenth century mahogany Secretaire Chest on Chest with carved decorated frieze and acanthus carving to canted corners in the upper section, the secretaire drawer revealing an arrangement of shaped drawers and pigeon hole. Raised on bracket feet. Original handles.

This chest relates closely to a “double chest of drawers” which is attributed to Thomas Chippendale and was supplied to Nostell Priory c. 1770-75. The Nostell Priory chest is illustrated by Christopher Gilbert ('The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale', Studio Vista, Christie’s, London, 1978, fig. 207, p.118) and close examination reveals a number of shared characteristics: the standard pattern handles, the narrow canted corner, the manner in which the canting is terminated at the top and bottom, and the choice of timber.
