This fine chest of good proportions instantly caught our attention with its beautifully shaped serpentine top unusually housed on a square chest, but its when you start to look a little closer it reveals what a true gem it is. Starting with some of the basic cabinet making technics, some of which practiced in the workshops of Thomas Chippendale. The first detail this chest shares with the Chippendale workshop is the method used to secure the top, the top is dovetailed housed allowing it to move back and forth on the carcass thus, stopping the top from splitting whilst also keeping it true and secured. The chest also uses pancake blocks to the inside of the mitered feet; pancake blocks are a series of blocks laminated. Possibly the most significant detail is when you look at the underside of the chest, Chippendale is known to have finished the underside of his pieces with a red spirit based wash, then to have fixed them to a packing crate secured with rose-head nails, this little chest also shares this detail. We were also excited when opening the finely dovetailed drawers that the internal carcass timber of the drawers is also of mahogany rather than the usual deal or oak. Finally the original simple pattern of swan-neck handle to the chest is a pattern known to have been used by Chippendale.
I will leave the mind open to cast judgment to whether it is or is not out of the Chippendale workshops, either way it is a super chest with a real charm and of exceptional colour and quality.
