Minor 1cm repair to lower band of enamel.
Comparator: Very similar enamel work can be seen on a George III ormolu, Geneva enamel and paste-set musical automaton quarter striking tower clock, made for the Chinese market in London, circa 1790, which was sold in Sotheby’s sale ‘Treasures Including Selected Works from the Collections of the Dukes of Northumberland’, on 9th July 2014, lot 48, has very similar enamel work.
Like the clock, the enamelled elements of this telescope would have been produced in Geneva and imported to London where the telescope was finally assembled. The similarities in detail and design suggest that enamel on both pieces was produced by the same enameller or came from the same workshop.
We are grateful to Julia Clarke for her assistance with the description of this item.
