A very fine George III mahogany pedestal in the manner of William Vile; with canted corners superbly carved with scrolls and trailing foliage with leaves and flowers; the front and sides with fielded panels of superbly figured mahogany of wonderful colour; the front incorporating a door opening to reveal a shelved interior above a pull out drawer fitted with a lead lined tray; with a later slate top.

Presumably intended for use in a dining room, this superb pedestal may well have been surmounted by an urn or a brass bound bucket; the lead lined lower drawer presumably intended to hold ice for use at the table.

A closely related pair of pedestals were sold, Property from a Private Collection, Sotheby's New York, 16 - 17 April 1993, lot 315.
