A fine George III period sea-green and gilt lacquer bracket clock by John Parker of Greenwich.

This exquisite clock is profusely decorated in a sea-green and gold lacquer case depicting chinoiserie figures holding parasols in a landscape with birds and flowers. The arched brass dial has a silvered centre with pierced rococo spandrels in the four corners and flanking the subsidiary dial showing strike/silent. The dial has a mock pendulum, date aperture above the VI and pierced blued steel hands with the maker’s name in florid script.

The elegant case has a shaped apron and a bell-top with a brass carrying handle and the sides are glazed. The 8-day verge movement strikes the hours on a single bell and the backplate is signed John Parker Greenwich.

Height: 17 ½ in (44.5 cm)

* John Parker died in 1766 and his widow continued the business. See Brian Loomes’ Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, page 593.

This is only the second clock which we have owned by this maker.
