A late George 111 purplewood cross banded and specimen wood Work Table. Possibly Gillows. Six work tables with this form of stretcher uniting square tapering legs appear in the Gillows Estimate Sketch book in the 1790's. The firm are known to have had an interest in unusual woods.The cubed parquetry top of this table includes calamander, yew, purplewood and partridgewood It is recorded that the firm sent 25ft of purplewood veneers at 10d per foot to the Oxford Street shop in December 1785. A similar work box was supplied by Gillows of Lancaster in 1808 to Miss Elizabeth Giffard of Neerquis Hall Flintshire. The use of purplewood as the main veneer is most uncommon being used usually for marquetry inlay or crossbanding. £2200.00 now sale price £1750.00.
