Antique Old Sheffield plated candlesticks. These very charming antique candle holders, made in circa 1760, are the earliest form of plated candlesticks. With decorative square shaped bases and acanthus leaf corners. Detachable sconces. Height 27 cms. Bases 12 cms square. Marked underneath with makers mark for Joseph Howard. Circa 1760. A similar pair are featured on page 35 of Gordon Crosskey’s authority on Sheffield plate.
These rare antique candlesticks are in excellent condition with no repair or restoration. The silver has never been replated and there is some copper showing. The makers mark is crisp and is a very good feature to have on an early piece of Sheffield plate. The inside edge of the nozzles are a bit misshapen from use over the years (see bottom photo). Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
