The antique cheese toaster is an unusual lidded serving dish with a carrying handle and detachable lid. Inside there is a set of 6 removable little dishes. Good plain style with a simple ring handle. The base has a warming chamber and the water can be filled by sliding a small plate on the side handle. A very versatile and practical item. Top 23x15.5 cms. Spread 35 cms. Height 10/12 cms. Small dishes 7x7 cms, height 1.2 cm. Unmarked. Old Sheffield plate. Marked underneath the handle and 6 small trays with the "bell" mark for Roberts, Smith & Co of Sheffield, UK. Circa 1820.
This rare silver plated dish is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The plate is original and has little wear.

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
Originally the cheese toaster was designed to stand in front of the fireplace where, using the detachable lid as a reflector, the heat would be directed down onto the cheese placed in the pan. These were made for a short period from the late 1760s.
