Denton Exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1792-1795. The inscription on the reverse of the present lot tells us that his Christian name was William, a fact that was previously unrecorded.

The 12th Light Dragoons were posted from England in 1793 to Mediterranean; where they fought in the seige of Toulon. In
1794, the year this miniature was painted: the Dragoons were in the Mediterranean; May - Cita Vecchia; Rome; August - Corsi. It is likely that this miniature was painted before the officer's departure with his regiment to the Mediterranean.
