An ivory and brass sector, the invention of just such an instrument credited to Galileo Galilei in about 1597. However, it was the English mathematician, Edmund Gunter, who added to it the crucial logarithmic scales in about 1624. This allows the sector to be used as a straight logarithmic rule, or more importantly, it can be used in conjunction with a pair of dividers to make trigonometric calculations required for navigation at sea.
This example English, circa 1800.
8 7/8 inches long when fully opened.
