An incredibly rare example of Georgian silver, this cheese stand was created by London silversmith Solomon Hougham. An item primarily crafted of plate or other materials, such as mahogany, there are only four other specimens known that are crafted of sterling silver, and those are either in private collections or museums. The opportunity to acquire such a masterfully crafted 18th-century silver cheese stand is exceptional.

The only known examples of Georgian silver cheese stands are:
1754/55, by Edward Wakelin, supplied to the Earl of Coventry, sold. Property of a mid-western collector, Christie's, New York, October 30. 1990, lot 343;
Two of 1764/65, by Edward Wakelin, supplied to the Earl of Exeter, one was sold by Christie's, London, July 6, 1966 and the other is in the Victoria & Albert Museum;
1764/65 by Parker and Wakelin, the Untermyer Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated in Hackenbroch, page 96, no. I 86.

This Georgian cheese stand is pictured in Geometry and the Silversmith: The Domcha Collection by Christopher Hartop, pages 107-108, number 95.
