This superb rare suite of sterling silver epergne and matching plateau by Matthew Boulton was hallmarked in 1810, but almost certainly started during 1809, the year he died. The suite carries an intriguing inscription on both the plateau and the epergne frame linking the set to the great family of Robert Adam, architect and designer.

Excellent
Birmingham 1810 by Matthew Boulton
“This slight but sincere testimonial of indelible gratitude to
William Adam Esqr. is presented to his dearly bloved daughter
Mrs Clementine Adam Thompson 1812
All speculation respecting the donor will be forever fruitless.
The tribute is paid alone to the sentiment.
Who builds a church to god and not to fame never inscribes the
marble with his name.”
