The armorial engraved on this salver is that of Bassett (of Beaupre, Co. Glamorgan) impaling a variant of Jones/Johns. Although both names are common in this part of Wales these arms would appear to be those of Richard Bassett (1742-1819) who married Mary Johns at Lavernock in Glamorgan in 1768. She died in 1778 but he never remarried. The motto beneath the armorials means "Death , rather than shame". On 4 feet. Hallmarked on the reverse.
Excellent.Original engraving,contemporary armorials.No known restorations or repairs.
