An antique sterling silver vinaigrette of plain oval form with a hinged lid and gilt interior. The pierced grill has an unusual applied double sunburst decoration. With a hand engraved monogram in old fashioned script. Marked inside the lid for Birmingham 1800. Maker Thomas Willmore.
This silver vinaigrette is in good condition with no damage or restoration. Fully marked inside the lid with English silver hallmarks, base unmarked. The gilt has flaked a bit inside the lid (see photo).

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
The vinaigrette is a small lidded box which opens to reveal a pierced grill underneath which would be a small sponge soaked in an aromatic substance such as vinegar or smelling salts. The inside surfaces would be gilded to protect the silver from staining.

Vinaigrettes were generally carried whilst travelling in order to combat the effects of foul smells encountered in the streets. Women also frequently needed smelling salts to revive themselves after fainting from wearing tight corsets.
