A late 18th century Georgian sterling silver hall marked helmet shaped cream jug.

The jug stands on a square plinth base, has an engraved floral decoration to the body with a shield below the spout and the rim is decorated with a row of miniature beads.

The jug has a narrow loop handle with an applied single reed decoration and is hall marked for London, 1791 with the maker's initials 'T.O' for Thomas Oliphant.

What is unusual about Thomas Oliphant is that he had a retail business in Manchester, bought London hall marked silver and had his initials 'T.O' stamped over the London maker's mark.

One of his supplier's was Peter & Jonathan Bateman, London makers, and when you look closely at the 'T.O' hall mark on this piece you can just make out the initials 'P.B' (Peter Bateman) underneath.

The jug is in good condition, the square plinth base has slight dents to the corners, the hall marks are clear.
