Large Mahogany Writing Slope by T.Handfords, London with brass reinforced corners, two brass escutcheons and flush fitting carrying handles which fit neatly into both sides of the writing box.

The interior has its original green baize writing surface, two inkwells and a section for holding pens and pencils, as well as a small secret drawer which is located by removing the long lid and smaller lid and by pulling up on the divider nearest the long lidded compartment, a small drawer will then spring out of a hidden compartment. The writing surface folds back to reveal two storage areas, in the lower compartment is a reading rail this can be removed and located in the exterior back brass edge by two small holes, the lecturn inside also allows you to have the box angled to read your notes or book on. The writing also has a drawer on the right hand side which can be opened by removing the retaining pin from the outer edge of the open box.

Inside the box there are two labels which read:

T.Handfords improved writing desk manufactory. No7, Strand, London.

"Backbiting.-The longer I live the more I feel the importance of adhering to the following rules :-1st. To hear as little as possible that is to the prejudice of other. 2nd. To believe nothing of the kind until absolutely forced. 3rd. Never to drink into the spirit of one who circulates an ill report. 4th. Always to moderate, as far as I can, the unkindness which is expressed towards others. 5th. Always to believe that if the other side were heard, a very different account would be given of the matter. -The Moralist."
