A very fine George III mahogany and rosewood cross-banded sofa table by Gillows of Lancaster. The top of particularly fine colour and patina throughout the surface, with an exceptional use of the grain of the timber traversing the top and across into both flaps. With boxwood stringing. Above two drawers in the frieze which pull out each side of the table. Standing on elegant splayed legs with similar stringing, each toe terminating in a box castor. With desirable high arched stretcher.

Particularly fine use of veneers.

Stamped ‘GILLOWS.LANCASTER.’ to the inside edge of one drawer.

A table of very closely related design and decorative detailing was supplied by Gillows of Oxford Street in 1803 to Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall, illustrated Susan E. Smith, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, p. 264, pl. 268. A drawing dated 1801, for a mahogany sofa table made by Gillows exists in the Westminster Archive Centre (Susan E. Smith, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, p. 265, pl. 269).
