A fine regency rosewood and brass inlaid games table. The rounded rectangular top and central sliding section with a chequerboard to the underside and a leather-lined well fitted as a backgammon board, with a drawer to either side opposed by a false drawer raised on spindle tressle end supports joined by lozenge cornered block with down swept legs leading to scrolled end carved to imitate brass capes raised on casters.
The overall form of this table with Grecian spindle–ends relates to an 1818 pattern in the Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (G.Wills, Craftsmen and Cabinet-Makers of Classic English Furniture, London, 1974, P. 123). A related rosewood table, bearing the stamp of James Winter (retailer) is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, P.497, fig. 1022
