This box is superbly decorated by the painter of the Berlin ’Königliche’ Porcelain Manufactory (KPM) Isaak Jakob Clauce. The inside to the cover bears a painting after the engraving ‘Le plaisir de l`été’ from 1755 by Jean Daullé (see image gallery). The engraving refers to an oil painting by François Boucher, which was in the possession of Madame Pompadour (cf. ‘L’Oeuvre gravé des Francois Boucher.’ Paris 1978, no. 564).

The external sides are painted with polychrome ‘putti’ surrounded by golden ‘rocailles’. The paintings of the upper side as well as the bottom are also after Boucher engravings. They were published by the French artist, art dealer, publisher and art connoisseur Gabriel Huquier.

The KPM was founded in 1763 by the Prussian king Frederik the Great.
