The ivory register plates are protected by a beveled glass, and are signed for WOODRUFF, NEW BRIDGE, DOVER. The weather indications are "fair", "change", "rain" and "stormy". There is a single vernier operated by a wooden key and rackwork.
The trunk is mounted with a wooden-cased mercury thermometer graded in degrees Fahrenheit.
The brass-cased cistern at the base adds protection, and additional weight to keep the barometer vertical whilst at sea.
The barometer can be hung on a wall or mounted on the gimbals.
Excerpts from the Dover Express newspaper in 1867 has W. & O. WOODRUFF, WATCHMAKERS, JEWELLERS, SILVERSMITHS, AND OPTICIANS, at 2, NEW BRIDGE STREET, DOVER.
