Norman Hartnell was born in Streatham and educated at Mill Hill School and Magdalene College, Cambridge. At Cambridge he became involved in designed production for the university Footlights, leading to employment with a London fashion designer. In 1923 he opened his own fashion house at 10 Bruton Street, Mayfair. His designs appealed to the Bright Young Things of the London Season when gave him an international reputation. He was to become the favourite designer for many members of the Royal family including Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II.

Although in his dedication on the mount Hartnell dates the work to 1914 it is more likely to date to c.1919.

We are grateful to Michael Pick, author of “Be Dazzled!: Norman Hartnell, Sixty Years of Glamour and Fashion” for his kind help in cataloguing this picture.
