Girl with a Cat is an important example of Durrant's early figurative style. From the mid 1950's onwards Durrant's subjects were primarily abstract. |

| DURRANT |
Born in 1925 Roy Turner Durrant was initially influenced by Keith Vaughan and John Minton. In the 1950's he developed from figuration to abstraction influenced by European abstractionists and by English poets including Gerard Manley Hopkins. He said any titles on his pictures were "meant to be interpreted as poetry, to engender a state of mind rather than describe exactly what the particular picture is".
Durrant was a member of the New English Art Club as well as showing at the Royal Academy regularly from 1950 and with various private galleries. His work is in public collections including the Imperial War Museum, Bradford City Art Gallery and Balliol College Oxford and also in many private collections. |
