The head piece is worn by Dutch women in the Northern Netherlands; the shape and style indicative of the husband's status and profession. This example would have shown extremely high status because the ornaments, which are visible and worn at the temples, are of 22ct gold and the crown is gilded silver. The head piece is worn under an expensive lace cap which obscures all but the gold ornaments and allows just a glimpse of the oorijzer through the sheer fabric of the cap.

The Oorijzer, which is unique to the Netherlands, developed from a simple metal band to secure the expensive lace caps from strong gusts of wind from the sea in the north of the country.
