Item Description / Dealer Expertise
A fine oil painting on panel in original gilt frame. The picture depicts a boy with kilt and sporran, wearing a Scottish cap with feather and the Scotland thistle badge. In his right hand the boy is holding a golf club, cleek with two long nose clubs on the ground to his left side. In the background to the left is Stirling Castle. The view is taken from Kings Park which has very early associations with golf in Scotland. King James the 4th played there in 1506.
Stirling Golf Club was founded 5 years prior to the painting in 1869 when Tom Morris junior was appointed the first professional. The subject is probably the son of a worthy local laird and club member.
The painting has a monogram in the bottom right hand corner, "AR" and is dated 1874.
We are looking into identifying the artist from the monogram.
