Described by Paul Theroux in the Great Railway Bazaar as ‘a monster of silver geometry in all the ragged rock and jungle’, Gotiek viaduct is the highest bridge in Myanmar, linking the former colonial summer capital of Pyin Oo Lwin and Lashio. Assembly began in 1899 by the American firm ‘Pennsylvania and Maryland Bridge Construction’ with components shipped from Philadelphia. It was completed in 1900 and was, on opening, the highest railway trestle in the world.
