NORTHGRAVES
Type Artist/Maker
Also known as DENTON OF HULL
Country of origin England
Started working 1790
Stopped working 1835

Denton Northgraves was a watch and clock maker and jeweller listed as working between 1790 and 1835. He worked at the corner of Silver Street and Lowgate No.32, Hull, from around 1813 to 1823. He was elected to represent Myton Ward on the City Corporation in 1835.

Denton was born in about 1787 in Elsternwick, Yorkshire. In the 1851 census he gave his occuapiton as retired watchmaker. He was living at 10 North Street, Kingston-upon-Hull with his young wife Catherine(37), who originated from Norwich, Norfolk, and son Charles(1) plus 2 servants. The records show that Denton died in 1854.

One source suggests that several Northgraves who settled in Canada were members of the same family, perhaps even brothers of Denton – they were Frederick, George and William. This remains to be proved.

Known clocks by him include a 12” dial regulator, c1810 with the name either side of the single winding hole, suggesting he decided to fit a regulator movement after the dial had been received. 6 longcase painted dial 8 day clocks, one to commemorate Nelson’s victory on the Nile in 1798.

2 watches by Litherland & Company and signed D. Northgreves, Hull c 1820.
