The elegant case is surmounted by a caddy top with three ball and spire finials. There are applied columns with giltwood capitals to the hood and glazing to either side. To the top corners above the door and around the dial is further gilt decoration.
The trunk door retains virtually all its original raised decoration. It features an arch with birds on top, various buildings, sailing and fishing boats, swans? and people. The base panel, which rests on a double plinth, is decorated in a similar manner.
The 8 day five pillar bell striking movement has a particularly attractive 12" brass breakarch dial which is signed on a raised & curved silvered brass strip around the arch. Within the arch is a revolving circular brass disc on which is engraved the time of high water at Bristol on any particular day.. The raised engraved and silvered chapter ring has roman hour numerals with half hour marks between and quartering on its inner aspect. On the outer minute ring are arabic numerals with half quarter marks. The dial centre is well matted; below 12o’clock is a seconds ring having sunburst decorative engraving to the centre. Above 6 o’clock is an aperture for the date, with a cartouche around it. Urn style spandrels are used for the four corners.
