Guido Reni
(Bologna 1575-1642)
study of
Portrait of woman with a fruit platter

oil on canvas cm 125 x 98
with frame 143 x 118

Origin : Private Collection Rome

The proposed work is inspired by the beautiful painting of Guido Reni "Salome with the Head of John the Baptist" (circa 1639), a jewel that is now preserved at the National Gallery of Ancient Art at Corsini Palace (Rome);

The figure of our beautiful lady who executed Salome painted by Reni, stands out against a dark and indistinct background, holds a tray of fruit; The beautiful play of chiaroscuro highlights the beautiful, very illuminated portrait, which directs the gaze of the observer towards his face. The technique of wise painting reveals its rich clothes and headgear of the canvas, through long sharp brush strokes. Guido Reni with the help of his store used to come back several times on the same subjects, producing versions of his compositions with more success; This makes it difficult to distinguish autograph replicas, the work of the workshop made with his intervention or copies that become autonomous interpretations by some of his best students.

In the school of Guido Reni has passed more than two hundred students, Italian and foreign, two generations of painters who competed with the teachings and the great master style. This painting represents a dating around the second half of the 17th century.

The high quality of the painting, which offers us an "interpretation" softer version of the Galleria Corsini, Excel to run loose, without fail, the chiaroscuro wise, the chromatic refinement, all the characters that suggest an editorial focused by a close associate.
