HAMILTON, GUSTAVUS C 1739-1775

He was born in Ireland the son of the Rev Gustavus Hamilton, Vicar of Errigal in the Dicese of Clogher and Rector of Gallon in the county of Meath. The family claimed descent from the Hamiltons of Priestfield, Midlothian. Hamilton was a pupil of R. West at the drawing school at George’s Lane, and was an apprentice of Samuel Dixon in Dublin, where he was employed to colour prints of birds and flowers produced by Dixon. Hamilton became a miniaturist and obtained a fashionable clientele.

He exhibited in Dublin from 1765-1773 from Parliament Street, 1 Dame Street and shortly before his death, Cork Hill. He died on 16th December 1775 aged 36 and was buried at St Werburgh’s. A good miniature by him of an unknown lady is in the National Gallery Dublin.
