Look at what I found on the Online Galleries website!
The British Museum has a Black Basalt Relief Medallion of the same portrait. There is one housed in the National Gallery of Victoria,Australia (236- D1M). The staining of the medallion is 'solid',ie. the oxide permeates through the medallion and there is one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (purchased with assistance of the Joseph Pulitzer bequest).
See also The Art Institute Chicago (1988.539.3) which details 71/45 written in pencil on the rear of the medallion and which is dated to 1777.
We are dating this medallion based on the date written in script, January 8 1795, on the rear of the medallion. The year 1795 is the year of Wedgwood's death,to be precise on 3rd January. Seen as such, this medallion may well have been one of a number produced in commemoration of Wedgwood's life.
