ANDREWS
Type Artist/Maker
Country of origin England
Born 1898
Died 1993

Sybil Andrews was born in Suffolk in 1898. She would depict local scenery at home using watercolour, but moved to London in 1922, where she came into contact with the contemporary art of the period. She seemed to show particular influence from the Cubist and Futurist styles of the Continent, and the British artists who had digested the style. She studied at the Grosvenor School of Art, paying for the teaching by working there as secretary. Most importantly, she was taught the linocut by Claude Flight. In 1928 she moved into her own studio, and was invited to participate by Flight in the Exhibition of British Linocuts at the Redfern Gallery. She met the printmaker Cyril Power, and they had an exhibition together in 1933. The pair also made a series of posters for London Transport under the name of Andrew Power. In 1947, Andrews emigrated to Canada, where she died in 1993. Consequently the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta, holds a collection of her work.
