There had been much coming and going between our home in Lees and Grandpa’s house in the Stockport Road, Manchester. Aunt Anne’s wedding caused great excitement. All Aunts and Mothers had very smart dresses and I was to be a Bridesmade and wear a long ball dress. It was the very first time I had ever been a Bridesmade and my dress was so beautiful. I cried when mother made me take it off. Mother cried too when she heard dear Aunt Anne say , “Come along Willie, your Aunts can drive back in the Landau, we’re going to walk home. We may never see Manchester again”, and she never did, for that night they set off for Australia and the year was 1908.”
