Henry Bishop was born in London in 1868 and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, in Paris at the Atelier Cormon and with the American painter Alexander Harrison on the Brittany Coast. On his return to England he moved to St Ives, Cornwall to be amongst the cosmopolitan colony of artists that had gathered there and was an early member of the St Ives Arts Club. However, by the early 1900s he had set up a studio in London and, apart from extended periods on the Continent and in Morocco, he lived there for the rest of his life. He exhibited with many of the London commercial galleries and with the national societies. He was elected a Member of the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club. One of his paintings was purchased for the Nation under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest and is held by the Tate Gallery.

This painting is an oil on canvas housed in a handbuilt decorated frame. The stain on the reverse of the canvas does not affect the painting. The landscape is most probably of Spain which he visited perhaps during his extended trips to Morocco.
