This maybe the enamel listed in National Portrait Gallery Mid Georgian Portraits by Ingamells, p.205 as being a version after the Reynolds by Henry Bone formerly in the Hallam Murray Collection,1896. Gibbon the Historian wrote the History of the Decline and Fall of the Romans Empire, 1776-88.The response to his work was mixed as his general tone throughout was cynical and pessimistic, including, controversially, when writing about Christianity.
