Portrait of Mr J Kennaway, he is wearing a pink jacket and waistcoat, white chemise and black stock. He has dark hair and side whiskers and blue eyes.

Watercolour and pencil on card in a rosewood frame with gold slip the reverse is inscribed " J Kennaway". The watercolour is signed "HBZ p (pinxit) 1835'.

Ziegler, Henry Bryan 1798-1874

He was born in Cripplegate, London the son of Henry Ziegler. He studied under John Varley and spent four years at the Royal Academy Schools. At the age of 18 he began a career as a portrait painter and he attracted the attention of Lord Bloomfield who encouraged his with introductions. He became drawing master to Prince George of Cambridge, Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimer, Queen Adelaide and Princess Elizabeth. He accompanied the Duke of Rutland on a tour of Norway sketching scenery. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1814-74. He lived in London at Hunter Street, Brunswick Square. His work is represented at the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Cambridge.
