Impressively constructed and attractive late 19th Century brass-cased compensated bulkhead Marine Aneroid Barometer – “The Paget” in original condition. The engraved, silvered brass dial, signed by the makers, numbered 3219 and bearing Admiral Fitzroy’s “Remarks”. Very unusual rotating “Falling/Rising” register dial ; the whole protected by bevelled plate glass. Triple brass mounts.

Henry Hughes was a noted manufacturer of precision marine instruments, working from premises in Fenchurch St. from 1830 until his death in 1879, his son having joined him in1866. Admiral Lord Paget was First secretary to the Admiralty from 1859-66, during which time Hughes won many lucrative instrument contracts for the Royal Navy………
