A fine 8-day marine chronometer by this well-known maker. The 8-day fusee movement has spotted plates, a subsidiary platform with Earnshaw type spring detent, free sprung bimetallic balance with helical spring, cylindrical weights and timing screws. It also has Poole’s auxiliary compensation and a tipsy winding key.

The signed and engraved silvered dial has Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and 8-day winding indicator. The finely tapering blued steel hands appear to be original. It is mounted on gimbals within the case and the cover to the winding square is sprung.

The well patinated three tier mahogany box with brass corners has an applied rectangular ivory label which bears the maker’s name and the number of the chronometer.

* Herbert Blockley is listed on page 79 of Brian Loomes’s Clockmakers of the World 21st century edition as working as successor to Lund and Blockley at 41 Duke Street, St James’s from the 1890’s until 1902.
