The Sugar Basket is most unusual as its surface is nearly entirely pierced. This is the first time we have seen so much of a piece, by Hester Bateman, covered in pierced work and the design is most unusual as well. The domed foot has a beaded rim and displays vertical pails and roundels. The same design is repeated around the main body, however the piercer has very expertly managed to rotate the piercing to give the impression of a swirling design. The unusual wavy dipping rim, and arched handle, are also decorated with beading. The front displays a vacant rectangular cartouche and the basket has a blue glass liner. It is fully marked on the lower half of the main body.

Height, to the rim: 5.5 inches, 13.75cm.
Diameter at the rim: 4.45 inches, 11.13cm.
Weight: 9oz.
