Carlo Ferranti was an Italian artist who lived and worked in Rome. He specialised in rustic figurative paintings and historical genre scenes. He travelled around his home city of Rome and the nearby coast painting villagers and every day Italian folk. He also painted views of Naples. His historical scenes depicted members of high society at leisure, elegantly dressed in period costume. They were similar in style to Arturo Ricci (1854-1919), Vittorio Reggianini (1858–1938) and Charles Frederick Soulacroix (1825-1879). During the 19th century, historical genre gained huge appeal as it looked back to what was perceived as the golden age of elegance and sophistication. Although little is known about his life, his works display an academic training and a skilled draughtsmanship. His paintings are full of detail, from the shimmering silks to the glimmer of gold on the edge of the tea set, often with a humorous overtone.

The painting is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
