The brass case lid depicts a seated Hoyle. Two of the counters depict Hoyle playing cards and the reverse is inscribed ‘Keep your Temper’. The other two show a seated lady playing cards and is inscribed around the face ‘Keep Your Temper'. The reverse depicts a Royal Crown within a laurel wreath.
Difficult to date but would appear to be circa 1800.

Edmund Hoyle (1672 - Aug 29, 1769) a writer, who, at the age of 69, began to tutor members of high society on how to play whist, publishing A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist in 1742, selling for 1 guinea. Hoyles laws of whist, which were regarded as authoritative until 1864, were superseded by new rules written by John Loraine Baldwin.
