A typically Flemish gabled red-brick building with long sash windows is utilised as the strong counterpoint to a sylvan late summer setting of repose. The thatched hunting lodge or inn is host to a hunting party seated in the wooded grounds; an ostler holds two horses and a boy attends to the dogs belonging to the weary hunters seated around a welcoming table. In the background is a white-painted and presumably plastered and timber-framed stables and external staircase. The two main figures in blue costume are seated at an 'X-framed' table with a bottle between them. A serving woman approaches. Another figure with a hunting rifle sloped over his arm restrains a dog on a leash. Two additional figures stroll under a formal clipped hedge structure.

Typifying Flemish genre painting, which revels in domesticity, this charming scene extends ones' vision to the countryside beyond. The artist has created a form of sylvan room, a stage upon which the actors are seen as mere passers-by in a well-ordered civilisation, instantly recognisable centuries later.
