An important oil on canvas by the Bellarusian-French artist Pinchus kremegne, and entitled "Corse", Piazza. A member of the select group of Montparnasse artists in Paris 1912. During this period he struck up friendships with Modigliani, Chagall and Leger. Leaving Paris he moved to a small town in the Pyrenees called Ceret, attracting other painters , such as Soutine and later Picasso to follow. Ceret now has an important museum exhibiting artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and Kremegne works. The art historian Michael Millock says of Kremegne's landscapes, ' they have such an air of life and movement as to surgest that at any moment they may become the scene of some dramatic event, and yet this sense of imminent dramas conveyed without any touch of literary intent, solely by the organisation of the physical constituents of the painting, colour line and form. There is a sense of underlying excitement in these landscapes"
This landscape, painted in 1924, is entitled "Corse", and depicts the Piazza landscape. Under glass, the oil is framed in its original gilt frame, with a wonderful letter verso, from Kremegne, to the owner of the painting, Madam Playfair. The date of the letter 1960, is the year he built his house in Ceret. The letter reads as follows,
"Dear Madam,
I thank you most sincerely for your charming letter. I am very happy that you like my painting. The Corsican landscape you have acquired was done in Piazza. It's a region which really enthused me and `I hope very much to be able to return there. I have now based myself in the Western Pyrenees and if one day you are passing by Ceret, I should be very happy to welcome you and your husband. Please accept, my dear lady, my very best wishes".
