A very rare Indiam miniature on ivory, relating to the Indian Mutiny, and the role played by the South Gloucestershire 61st Regiment. Finely painted with a bedraggled Union Jack, crossed with the colours of the South Gloucestershire 61st Regiment. This particular standard carrying the names of the campaigns involving the 'Glorious Glosters', in minute details, including the Seige of Delhi, in 1857.
Mounted behind glass, in an ebony easel frame, ornately carved with floral scroll. Brass ring for suspension.
Very minor wear to the painting. Otherwise in perfect condition. No restoration.
Prior to their time in India, the 61st were stationed in Ceylon from 1828 - 1840. They returned to England and Ireland from 1840-45, after which they moved to India, fighting in the Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848-49: at the Battle of Ramnagar (November 1848), Battles of Saddalupar and Chillianwala (December 1848- January 1849) and Battle of Gujrat (February 1849). The regiment was still in India when Indian Rebellion of 1857 broke out. They took part in the Siege of Delhi.
