A finely carved red sandstone fragment of a lion from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh dating from the late 1st or early 2nd century AD during the Kushan period.
Despite its fragmentary condition some feature such as the furry mane or the eyebrows reveal the work of a very skilled sculptor.
The sculpture would have formed a pillar framing the entrance to a sacred enclosure.
Comparable examples:
-Victoria and Albert Museum, London
-A similar one was sold in 2008 by Sothebys New York ( see attached picture)
-Mathura Museum
