A superb coromandel sewing box by Austin of Dublin, beautifully inlaid to both the top and all four sides in brass, mother of pearl and abalone, with trailing flowers and birds, the lid opens to reveal a blue velvet lined interior with gilt tooling, engraved lock plate and hinges and mother of pearl inlay to interior fallings of the lid and base and a brass name plate for Austin St Andrews Street, Dublin, the interior of the lid holds a mirror and a silk lined stationery compartment, whilst the removable tray has a selection of mother of pearl cotton reel holders, silk winders, tape measure, needle cleaner, various tools, and two silver thimbles.
In the Dublin Street directory for 1862, Thomas and George Austin are listed as dressing case and despatch box manufactures to the Viceregal Court, cutlers, stationers and importers of French and foreign fancy goods, late of St Andrews, Street.
