A superb Irish George III carved giltwood triple plate over-mantel mirror in landscape form, carved in the rococo taste. The frame with pierced scrolling acanthus and double ‘C’ scroll carved cresting, with emanating carved leaves along the upper frame. Three shaped mercury glass (apparently original) rectangular plates divided by column pilasters. Each side is formed of an S shaped carved scroll, grounded by an arch and pillar, with trailing vines and leaves around the scroll. The pierced and carved bottom apron with central arch over lattice work, bordered by emanating leaves and pillars.

Further Information:
It is unusual to find an over-mantle of this landscape orientation, most are orientated in portrait. This particular example has crisp and exquisite carving throughout. It retains most of the original gilding which has been refreshed in places. The influence of French furniture in the Rococo style was predominant in Europe during the 18th century. In the second half of the century England played a leading role in establishing the Neoclassical style, and for supreme craftsmanship provided an inspiration to workshops in several countries; but in the diffusion of the two styles, the Rococo and the Neoclassical, French designs were universally imitated, tastefully and succesfully by many English and Irish makers of the period.
Excellent. Minor restorations, gilding largely original, refreshed in places. Mirror plates apparently original.
