Extremely attractive Irish George III sterling silver pierced oval basket with handle.
Maker: John Locker. Dublin 1775.

The body is decorated with wheat sheaves while the border has flowers and leaves. The base is beautifully engraved with a contemporary coat of arms and the motto "RIGHT CAN NEVER DIE". The oval, pierced foot is finished with a band of gadrooning. The simple design of the handle echoes that of the sides of the basket.
The full set of hallmarks and maker's mark are clearly stamped among the piercing of the body just below one side of the handle. The underside of the handle is stamped with the Hibernia assay mark.

ARMS: TOLER for John Toler, 1st Earl of Norbury. As Attorney-General for Ireland, he was responsible for the prosecution of those involved in the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
